Blogging tips
This morning I received a notification that my blog was going to be featured on freshly pressed. I’m not going to act all cool about it. I was so excited that I went and woke up my fiancé to tell him! There are literally millions of blogs out there, and it’s a real honor to be picked.
There are tons of articles out on the net about how to get attention with your blog, but I thought I would share some thoughts with you.
1- Original Content
It’s fine to post a quote now and then, or to post someone else’s blog post that you enjoyed reading. However, if you want to attract readers in this very competitive medium, you need to write your own words. You don’t have to be a literary genius to write original content, just pick a subject and tell folks what you think. Speaking of which…
2- Have an Opinion
Don’t be afraid to say what you think about something. Have an opinion about marriage, present participle phrases, or chem trails? Let folks hear it! I love posts like this, even if I don’t agree with the poster. Reading other people’s opinions helps me clarify what I believe myself.
3- Pictures!
I don’t care what you are writing about, having a picture on your post brightens it up and gets people’s attention. It’s nice if you can connect the pic to the subject of the post, but you don’t have to. I’ll go one step further and add that it’s nice to see original pictures. I don’t care if you aren’t a great photographer, I like seeing bits of people’s lives. It helps me connect to them and builds a feeling of community. All the pics on my blog are pics that I have taken myself, unless I have reposted someone else’s post. Some of the pics are quite nice, I think. Some are just snapshots. All belong to me and my life.
4- Regular Posting
If you want folks to read your blog, you have to give them something to read with some frequency. It doesn’t have to be every day. It doesn’t have to be all the time. My blog suffered when I was packing, moving, and changing jobs. There was nothing I could do about it. Now that I’m settled, I’m back to the one or two posts a week that I was doing before the move.
5- Luck
Even though I did all of the above, to the best of my ability, I know that I am still very lucky to get Freshly Pressed. There are a lot of blogs out there, my friends. Don’t give up, and enjoy your blog, whether you have a ton of readers, or just a handful. Connect it to your Facebook or twitter. Even if I just have a couple of readers who enjoy what I wrote, it makes me happy. If you are enjoying writing it, then others will enjoy reading it.
I followed Denise here from a post she made today. I have only been at this about four months and somehow was already doing all of these except the luck one. I do think these are very useful tips !
My advice about blogging is pretty simple. It’s meant for people just starting out blogging. As far as the luck thing goes, I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you!
Thanks I appreciate it, thanks for all the likes on my blog. I am on my phone now will browse your site some more when I get home. Have a great day
I enjoyed visiting your blog!

Ooh, this is a good blog. I got to you through A Little Blog of Books. I like the focus on writing and pictures. I hate that sometimes I have to put my blog in a category and it never fits. It’s just about me. I like things that don’t fit.
Anyway, you have given me confidence to use one of my pictures in a future post even though it is not perfect. And thank you for the reminder that blogging is to make you happy, just for the one reader who makes an interesting comment back.
So glad that you found it! I like seeing people’s pictures. They don’t have to be fancy or perfect. I expect that most folks feel the same way. Lol, and the reason I chose “pictures” and words is it really does let me write about anything I want! I didn’t want a blog that was all about one thing.
I meant “pictures and words,” not just air-quote pictures. I are writer!
